Is the battery technology between an all-electric vehicle and an E_REV vehicle different?

Extended Range Electric Vehicles (EREV) are distinguished from fully electric, or Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) in that they contain a small internal combustion engine, which powers a generator when the batteries are at a low state of charge. This allows the batteries to achieve added range to what they would achieve alone.  EREVs operate on battery alone for short distances and in generator mode for longer distances. BEVs operate solely on battery power.

The key difference between battery technology for EREVs and BEVs is in the power to energy ratio. A BEV requires 25-40 kilowatt hours (KWh) of energy, which is twice the size of an EREV and ten-times that of an HEV. (The Nissan Leaf, a BEV, for example, holds a 24kWh battery with a driving range of 100 miles of city driving.) Additionally, the power requirements of a BEV are lower than an EREV. Given that power is the instantaneous rate of energy use, it is more available where there is higher energy content (BEV) and less available where there is less energy content (EREV). Therefore, there is more power required in an EREV to pull energy.

The following chart from General Electric shows the scale of Power to Energy Ratio’s across different vehicle types:

In addition, a BEV is generally able to use more of the State of Charge of a battery. EREVs and hybrids maintain a narrower window of usable energy because they are prone to more dynamic pulses from engine cycling, which stress the battery. BEVs have a more gentle and predictable use profile, without dynamic pulses. They, therefore, generally utilize more of the operating range of the battery.

Both EREV and BEV technology are suitable technologies to deploy in a fleet. Choosing one over the other entirely depends on a fleet’s specific needs, vehicle mission, and work profile.
