Question – Cell phone policy
With the new ruling (FMCSA 35-11) from the United States Department of Transportation on CDL (commercial driver’s license) and CMV (commercial motor vehicles) drivers, has anyone put into effect a policy against cell phone use by drivers while driving?
Answers from the community
Member: Our city policy is no city employee is to use a cell phone while driving unless it is done with a hands-free device. The only exception is for emergency services personnel, particularly police officers (as fire and ems have more than one person in a vehicle), and when critical information that cannot be exchanged over the radio is needed. We will review the use of cell phone while driving on a case by case basis.
Member: Here is an excerpt from our vehicle policy that addresses your question.
1. To meet or exceed new vehicle codes, and reduce distractive driving behaviors, the use of electronic communication devices shall be limited to that described in table 1 below.
2. All ancillary functions of cell phone usage including texting, e-mail, internet access, and GPS navigation are prohibited while driving.
3. “Hands Free” use in personal vehicles should be minimized.
4. All drivers are responsible for the minimization of any form of driving distractions. Drivers are personally responsible for resolving any traffic citations. Read more
