Source: Utilimarc Data in this report is derived from the data of 60 of our utility and municipal fleet benchmarking clients and their active Toyota Prius units.

The sample included nearly 5,000 Prius compared to nearly 11,000 other active compact cars, such as the Ford Focus, Honda Civics, and Chevrolet Cruze, etc. The data being used is representing the patterns we have seen from the industry average of the selected sample.

Operating costs

This graph shows the operating cost (all parts and labor) net of fuel per mile for the Prius vs. other compact cars by age. The overall trend for both the Prius and the other compact cars is that the operating cost per mile is increasing as the vehicle ages.

The operating costs for the Prius in year one was $79 per 1,000 miles, while in year 10 it was $107 per 1,000 miles, an increase of $28 per 1,000 miles over the 10 years. The average operating cost per 1,000 miles for the Prius over the same 10-year period was $108.74.

The operating costs for the compact car class in year one was $101 per 1000 miles, while in year 10 it was $314 per 1,000 miles, the increase of $213 per 1,000 mikes over the 10 years. The average operating cost per 1,000 miles for the compact car class over the same 10-year period was $219.50.

Fuel cost per 1000 miles

This graph shows the fuel per 1,000 miles for the Prius vs. other compact cars by age. The cost of fuel for the Prius has remained consistent as the vehicle ages, while the cost for the other compact cars in the class has varied as the vehicles age.

The fuel costs for the Prius in year one was $86 per 1,000 miles, while in year 10 it was $78 per 1,000 miles, a decrease of $8 per 1000 miles over the 10 years. The average fuel cost per 1,000 miles for the Prius over the same 10-year period was $82.

The fuel costs for the compact car class in year one was $133 per 1,000 miles, while in year 10 it was $135 per 1,000 miles, an increase of $2 per 1,000 miles over the 10 years. The average fuel cost per 1,000 miles for the compact car class over the same 10-year period was $142.

Average miles driven by year

This graph shows the average miles driven from 2010 to 2014 for the Prius and vs. other compact cars. The annual average miles driven between the years 2010 and 2014 for the Prius decreased from 9,735 to 8,777. The annual average miles driven between the years 2010 and 2014 for the other compact cars remained fairly consistent starting at 7,290 miles in 2010, and ending at 7,561 in 2014.

For the data set above, the Prius has historically been driven more miles annually than other compact cars at 9,208. From 2010 to 2014 the Prius was driven an average of 1,702 more miles annually than the other compact cars.

Average number of days between unscheduled repair

This graph shows the average number of days between an unscheduled/demand repair event from 2010 to 2014 for the Prius vs. the other compact cars.

From 2010 to 2014 the Prius overall increased in amount of days between the average number of days between an unscheduled/demand repair from 123 to 163. From 2010 to 2014 the other compact cars also saw an increase in the average number of days between an unscheduled/demand repair event from 109 to 126. The Prius historically has an average of 115 days between unscheduled/demand repair event. The other compact cars historically have an average of 115 days between unscheduled/demand repair event.

Average age since 2010

This graph shows the average age of vehicles from 2010 to 2014 for the Prius vs. other compact cars. The average age of both the Prius and other compact cars has steadily increased since 2010.

The average age for the Prius increased by 3.31 years from 2010 and 2014, while the other compact cars increased by 0.7 years from 2010 to 2014. Historically, the Prius has been aged more than the other compact cars, with an average age from 2010 to 2014 of 5.7 vs. other compact cars at 5.5 years over the same span of time.

Average mile per gallon (MPG) by year

This graph shows the average miles per gallon (MPG) by year, from 2010 to 2014 for the Prius vs. other compact cars. The average MPG historically for the Prius is 43 MPG, vs. other compact cars at 25 MPG.

Percentage of total class

This graph shows the percentage of compact car class is the Prius vs. other compact cars makes up vs. other compact cars from 2010 to 2014. The overall trend is that the Prius is making up a smaller portion of the compact car class each year, starting at 35% of the class in 2010 and ending at 28% in 2014.
