What is your fleet's overall AFV acquisition strategy? What are the primary/majors factors contributing to your AFV strategy?
At PG&E our strategy is to use alternate fuel technology to improve emissions, but also to improve operating costs. While some of the technology is still pretty pricey, in almost all cases the fuel itself is generally less expensive than gas or diesel. While the hybrid technology in the big trucks has always been difficult for us to make work from an investment perspective, we are still very excited about the opportunities that E-PTO's and electric vehicles (particularly those with on-board generation) are bringing to the market. They look pretty promising.

"American Electric Power is trying to use technology, alternative fuels and OEM ready equipment to strike the balance to our vehicle emission strategy. In looking at this issue there is not silver bullet and it must be each fleet management call to find the application that works best for your fleet. We have utilized thousands of gallons of B20 Biodiesel with success and believe it offers lubricity in conjunction with ULSF in our on road equipment. The use of expanded Telematics offers greater insight into how the equipment is used and what options or solutions you can offer end users to reduce emission and to gain synergies in preventive maintenance. PHEV and PEV’s have their place in operations but have a long way to go for the applications and for ROI consideration. However, you must help OEM’s gain insight into their use and as the electric utility to understand how this technology will impact power grid demands as it becomes more affordable for general public use. The one technology for utility fleets as I see it that has an ROI and the best application is the medium duty hybrid chassis with an aerial lift application. We are excited to be using this technology and understanding how and what application makes the best use of the technology. Having the E-PTO reduce fuel consumption, preventative maintenance costs plus having positive feedback from the equipment operator from low noise in after hour and work zones create better communication and happier electric customers who may already be un-happy about an unexpected electrical interruption."
