Casings

Casings

I've reviewed the latest study on recaps and I had one question for the group.  Is there an industry standard for the life of a casing. Our current tire vendor is telling me 6 years, I was wondering if anyone else has any feedback.

My Goodyear, Continental and Michelin Tire Representives along with my local recapping vendor (Bandag) do not wish to use cases over 5years old. Our Current practice is one cap on cases, and we do not uses cases over 5yrs old per these recommendations.

There is no question that age is important, but our experience doesn't lend us to draw a clear line in the sand when it comes to defining a mandatory retirement age for tires.  Operating and storage conditions play as big (or bigger) role in the life of the tire, or the number of times that it can be recapped, than does the age of the casing.  We have not outlined an age criteria for pulling tires, nor have we limited the number of caps that can be placed on a casing.  We purchase tier one tires when ever possible and then we let our tire supplier (Goodyear) evaluate the condition of each casing when it goes in for recapping.  We don't see any unusual failure patterns and we don't get an unusual amount of operator complaints.  While, I can't speak for everyone, this process seems to work for us.

We also had a 5 year life on casings for recap.. We discovered that we were discarding good resusable tire casings.. After discussing with our recapper ( bandag) we've extended the casing life and Bandag now makes recommendations through their testing and validation process and now we've been able to extend the useable life to 6 years plus.

Does anyone have a viable bid specification for recapping.
