With rising fuel prices, I was wondering what other fleet managers are doing to control & manage their fuel budget.
We are doing several things:
1) we are working with several suppliers to look at fixed price fuel agreements. The 12 month prices are currently much better than the short term prices that we are currently experiencing.
2) we are working on managing fuel consumption throught the use of tracking reports from our current fuel supplier.
3) we are using technology such as Altec's E-WIMS system to manage idling issues
4) we are using both electric technology, like the Chevy Volt, to drastically reduce fuel consumption. Our Volts are easily running well into the mid 80's on mpg.
We are also focusing on ensuring employees are adhering to the policy on the use of vehicles for personal use. Some companies (not utilities) have found a lot of personal use once they installed GPS tracking units. Also we establish a reduction goal each year, and teach our drivers EcoDriving.
we have a strong purchase program, so cost is not something we can correct, so we focused on consumption, Idle times, Route planning, Carpooling, and Good vehicle & equipment Maintenance programs, and reduced speeds to shave approximately 15%. We cut the take home vehicles, and added Hybrids to the Fleet. The savings are possible, it's the education process, and breaking old habits we must overcome.......Good luck.
