Are your mechanics reimbursed or supplied uniforms?

We currently supply uniforms through CINTAS. We provide them with 11 pants, 11 Short Sleeve Shirts, and 11 Long Sleeve shirts. The uniform material has to be cotton, we do not allow polyester. We provide them with one set of Overalls every two years and we have a boot policy, in which the mechanic can puchase one sets of boots per year but cannot exceed $160 that they have to purchase through our supllier so they meet the OSHA specification.

Are they required to wear Fire Resistant (FR) clothing as part of their job?

There are a few mechanics that we supply thin FR Coveralls through CINTAS, for those that perform alot of work on vehicles in the Substation or with in the generation plant. For the other that rarely have to perfrom work on vehicles in those areas that require FR clothing we purchased each a set of thin FR coveralls that the mechanic is responsible for maintaining.

If you reimburse, how much per employee per year do you provide?

We provide uniforms to all 200 + of our technicians. We offer a jacket, 11 sets in combination of cotton short or long sleeve shirts with cotton Blue Jeans. We do not require our technicians to have flame resistant clothing but to be in compliance with company guidelines if or when they enter into a substation to retrieve or work on a vehicle they carry fire resistant clothing on the shop truck. It can be in the form of a shirt, coveralls or a jacket. We looked at reimbursement or allowances but were able to secure better pricing using one supplier. The big money saver was to purchase clothing insurance and not pay for damaged clothing it saves us hundreds of dollars per yr....

All of our mechanics and service workers are supplied a choice of coveralls, shirts and pants, or overalls. They are also supplied a new set of boots yearly. Our shirts and pants are offered in cotton or a poly blend. Some of our facilities maintenance mechanics are also given Fire Resistant clothing as well since they work in substations and other certain areas where there is risk of fire.

Our Mechanics are given an allowance of 500.00 a year for clothing. They are not required to purchase chemical/Fire resistant clothing. Our people love this because they never liked our uniform company or the uniforms. Granted, the company was on State Contract and the only one we could rent from for that reason. The company only provided 5 sets of uniforms and 2 days pick up for laundry. Those uniforms were chemical resistant. Are there OSHA laws stating that Mechanic uniforms have to be chemical/fire resistant?

Our mechanics are supplied with 6 non-FR shirts and pants and are replaced as needed usually around every 18 months. They are also supplied 1 FR shirt that is kept in their locker and must be worn when entering an electrical substation or power plant switchyard. They are also supplied an FR jacket. TEP has not started wearing FR pants but will probably do so in the next year. Mechanics will be given 1 pair of FR coveralls that will be used at the same time as their FR shirt.
