Has anyone experienced damaged International model DT 466 engines that were the result of piston sleeve o-ring failure? Suggestions?
We have had many, many failures. Mostly 2002-2004 motors. Fail with no warning, International was allowing partial warranty some years ago. Problem was traced to a different supplier of the O rings to IH, they could not take the heat at the upper O ring.
Yes, we have had these O-ring failures as well on those model years of 2002-2004. International has been good about picking up some of the repair expense, but not all of it. When they fail, it usually means major engine repair piston scoring and liner damage.
We had big issues with our Internationals. From June 2008 to October 2009, we had issues with five (5) of ours. I tried to attach an "I Know" bulletin that International "doesn't" share with everyone called the "2000-2003 DT466/530 Piston Pin Boss Scuffing." (My file was too big so only some of it would copy to this forum but maybe you can find it on the internet or give me your e-mail address and I will e-mail the bulletin to you)
We had replaced two engines prior to receiving this. The only way we stumbled across this was after replacing two (2) engines earlier, we had two (2) more fail us in one single day. At that point it became obvious that there definitely was an issue. This was in May of 2009 and in the midst of trying to come to terms with International, we had another same failure October 2009. We fought with them for quite some time before coming to an agreement for our repair issues.

We also expereinced O'Ring failure due to poor design and manufacturing. We are seeing it reoccur, not to the same magnitude, on 2008 DT466E's as well. International supply is with works kits and we supplied labor. On average we were doing an in-frame for about $5k.
We have had 2 such failures in the past year. Both came unexpected with no warning, one on a unit with 54,000 miles and 5000 hrs the other on a unit with 64,000 miles and 5400 hrs. International was not alot of help even after referencing past issues with these motors (DT466). We did in house in frames as International wanted over 9k to do them. We did not get much help on Works kits as they claimed no liability because of units age.
