Testing di-electric strength of hydraulic oil

Testing di-electric strength of hydraulic oil

I am writing on behalf of dMackey, a member of the FleetAnswers community:

"Do you test the di-electric strength of the hydraulic oil in insulated aerial equipment?

If you do, how often do you test the oil, and do you test it to ASTM D877 or ASTM D1816?"

Thanks!

Wouldn't the oil be tested when you do your 6 month or 12 month electric test of the full unit?

Yes, the oil is tested as the unit is tested. If there is a concer about the condition of the oil, you would be better to test the moisture content of the system.

We test the oil on a 6 month interval when we test the truck. I hear that some never test the oil.....

We test every 6 months when the boom is tested or if more than 50% of oil is changed due to a leak. We also retest the boom whenever a Hydraulic line through the insulated portion of the boom is changed.
