What makes up our Support Staff's

As we make our industry comparisons - Units per Support Staff, would it be feasible to build an understanding of our staffing make up.

Fleet Acquisition & Disposition - Fleet Regulatory-Policies and Procedures, Compliance & Self Assessment,  Fleet Training, Fleet Manage & Maintain. Based on the various organizational structures, we could see a wide spread of activities that are Fleet related but are or are not factored into our Fleet organizational structures.

I have been working with Utilimark and Fleet Answers on a comprehensive staffing study where as we look at all fleet functions and apply some weighting to those tasks so fleets can have a real comparison.    Unfortunately, I have been busy and have not had a chance to devote much time to this lately but I hope to in the coming months.  We need to start with a list of all fleet functions and then we can apply FTE percentages.  We would love to have anyone participation in this effort.

When we consider the Support Staff per vehicle measure we count any associate in our department that is not directly related to the repair/maintenance of the vehicles.  I believe that there are quite a few activities that fit this area that are just considered "part time tasks" that Transportation takes on only because no one else in the organization will take it on and we are afraid that it will fall through the cracks if we don't.

Basically your support staffing should be between 1 suport staff for every 1-5 technicians you have.

This will very depending on your mission as described by your particular agency.

You will have several business units within your agency. Parts operation, radio repair and automotive equipment repair. Each of these business units must be stand alone opertions. They must be competitive, price wise, ie shop rates with the private endustry.

You must know wich of your staff support a business function and wich of your staff support functions that are needed but not part of your basic business.

You must also know how you pay for staff that might not be part of your business. Functions like spec writting would need to be paid for from a funding sourse that is not part of your shop rate.
